Does EMDR therapy work online?

One of the most common questions I hear is whether EMDR can really work over video. The short answer: for many people, yes. Here's how it works, what's different online, and how to tell if it's a good fit for you.

A quick refresher: what is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy for trauma. It's recommended by the World Health Organization for post-traumatic stress. EMDR helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they stop feeling like they're happening right now. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating tapping, while you briefly bring a memory to mind.

You don't need to describe every detail of what happened. The work happens inside your own nervous system, at a pace you control.

How EMDR works over video

The structure of online EMDR is the same as in person. What changes is how the bilateral stimulation is delivered:

We'll try the options together and use whichever feels most comfortable and effective for you.

Is it as effective as in-person EMDR?

Research on virtual EMDR has grown a lot in recent years, and it suggests online EMDR can be effective for many people. Clinically, many of my clients find trauma work easier from home. Being in a familiar, private space can make it feel safer to open up, and there's no commute to manage afterward.

Everyone is different, though. Part of our early work is checking that online sessions feel steady and safe for you.

When in-person might be a better fit

Online EMDR may not be the right starting point if you don't have a private space where you won't be interrupted, if your internet connection is unreliable, or if you're currently in crisis and need more intensive support. We can talk through any of these in your free consultation.
